With $35 in his pocket, John Boucher moved to Leominster from Quebec looking for a job and a new life. The 18-year-old, youngest in a family of 14 children, was used to hard work. He had to drop out of school after third grade to help with the 200-acre family farm after his older brothers left home. When his turn came to leave, Boucher worked as a lumberjack before an older sister invited him to join her in Leominster, where there was a large community of French-speaking immigrants.

Boucher’s first job was at the Foster Grant factory, but he couldn’t stand being inside all day. A local builder hired him as a carpenter and so Boucher helped build houses for a few years. He reconnected with former neighbors from Quebec, who also had moved to Leominster. This is when he met his future wife, Marie. They were married in 1958.

Through the 1960s, Boucher Construction Corporation built concrete foundations for houses throughout northern Massachusetts. The business steadily grew and Boucher hired crews to work in Leominster and eventually all over New England.

In the early 1970s Boucher saw another opportunity. Often, his crews were held up because the builders were waiting for excavators. Boucher realized if he did the excavating he’d have better control of his work schedule, so he bought a bulldozer and added excavating to the business.

After decades of consistent hard work and a desire to perform only the highest quality of work possible, John decided to step down and retire. He ended up naming the youngest of his five children, Steve Boucher, as the President of the company. To this day, Steve remains the President of Boucher Construction Corporation and continues the success of his father.
